THE GREAT WALL NEAR BADALING
In Badaling the great wall section is entirely reconstructed amidst lots of souverir stores and a Starbucks. This section is ten miles away. Our van parked in a dirt lot and we hiked 45 minutes up the hill to this authentic section of the wall. It's very isolated giving you a sense of how the guards lived as they waited and watched for the Mongol hordes to breach their position.
CITY WALL - XIAN
This was the traditional winter quarters for the Emperor and his government and the easter terminus of the Silk Road. This wall surrounds the central city, an area of 4 square miles.
